Introducing Gumnuts: our way of saying thanks

As we build CompKoala, we want appreciation to be part of the community from the beginning. Sharing a competition, pointing out an incorrect detail or suggesting an improvement all take time and effort. Gumnuts are our way of recognising that effort, and they give members a way to say thanks to each other, too.

You can earn Gumnuts by taking part in CompKoala, then pass some along when you appreciate someone’s feedback post or reply. The idea is simple: if someone helps you out or contributes something useful, you have a small way to acknowledge it.

How you earn Gumnuts

Marking a listed competition as entered earns you 1 Gumnut, while having a competition you submitted approved earns 10 Gumnuts. You’ll also receive 3 Gumnuts for each badge you unlock. Entry rewards are counted once per competition, so repeat entries won’t earn extra, and submission rewards arrive after approval.

There are rewards for helping improve the site as well. Our team can award 5 Gumnuts when your report helps fix a competition listing, or 25 Gumnuts when we implement your suggestion. If another member gives you a Gumnut on a feedback post or reply, that adds one to your balance.

A way to thank each other

As conversations begin in feedback, you’ll be able to give a Gumnut to a post or reply you appreciate. That might be someone answering your question, explaining an idea clearly or raising something you’re glad they brought up. Clicking Give Gumnut transfers one Gumnut from your balance to theirs.

You can give up to three Gumnuts each day, provided you have enough in your balance. Your daily giving allowance resets at midnight Brisbane time. There’s no expectation to use all three; they’re there whenever you feel someone deserves a little thanks.

A little extra along the way

Reaching 50 Gumnuts unlocks the ability to upload a profile photo, so you can make your account your own. Once that feature is unlocked, it stays unlocked—even if giving Gumnuts to other members brings your balance below 50.

The Gumnuts page brings everything together. You can check your total, see how many Gumnuts you have left to give today, review your recent activity and follow your progress towards unlocks. More unlocks will appear there as we add them.

CompKoala is just getting started, and we hope it grows into a place where people enjoy sharing finds, asking questions and helping each other. Gumnuts are a small part of that ambition: a way to make sure the effort people put in receives a little appreciation.
