Welcome to CompKoala v1 beta
By Jarred · · 3 min read

CompKoala started because finding decent competitions online was more annoying than it needed to be. There are plenty of competitions out there, but actually finding ones that suit you often means digging through expired listings, unclear entry requirements, clunky websites, and pages that seem more interested in collecting your details than helping you find something worth entering.
I thought there should be a simpler way to do it, so I started building one.
What is CompKoala?
CompKoala is a free directory of competitions that Australians can enter. We don't run the competitions ourselves, and entries always happen on the promoter's own website under their own terms and conditions.
The idea is simply to make the part before entering easier: finding competitions, understanding what is involved, and keeping track of the ones you care about.
More useful than a list of links
I don't want CompKoala to become a giant pile of competition links. Before a competition is added, I look over the information that's available and try to present the useful details in a consistent way, including things like closing dates, eligibility, entry requirements, purchase requirements, entry frequency and the platform the competition runs on.
The goal is that you can look at a listing and quickly work out whether it interests you without having to dig through several pages first.
CompKoala also avoids personal referral links. Clicking an entry button shouldn't secretly improve anyone's chances of winning something.
Quality over quantity
There will probably always be competition sites with more listings than CompKoala, and that's fine. I'd rather have a smaller directory that's easier to use than add everything I come across just to make the numbers look bigger.
Some things won't be listed at all, including raffles and lotteries. I may also leave out promotions that don't fit the kind of competitions CompKoala is trying to collect, are too unclear to list properly, or simply aren't a good fit for the directory.
That filtering isn't a verification or guarantee. CompKoala doesn't independently verify that a promoter is legitimate, that a competition will run exactly as described, or that a prize will be awarded. Promoters run their own competitions and their own terms apply. CompKoala's role is to organise the information that is available and make it easier to understand.
Still a work in progress
CompKoala is currently a v1 beta, so there will be rough edges and things that change over time. New features will be added as I work out what is actually useful rather than just adding things for the sake of it.
The basics are already here: browsing and filtering competitions, saving them, keeping track of entries, and building a history of comps you've entered and won. There's plenty more I want to improve from here.
Thanks for checking it out
If you've found CompKoala this early, thanks for giving it a go. If something is broken, confusing, missing, or you have an idea that would genuinely make the site more useful, feel free to send it through the feedback page.
CompKoala is a small project, and feedback at this stage can have a real effect on what gets built next. Hopefully it makes finding your next competition a little easier.
